Christmas Prop Making

Christmas prop making sessions

As part of our commitment to achieving the Arts Mark and the Leading Parent Partnership Award we invited parent into school to work with Claire West our Art Teacher.  Some parents have now attended 3 sessions and started to make props for our Christmas Concert.  As you can see from the photographs work is well in place but we still need more props.  If you are able to help come along to our next session please feel free to do so it is on Thursday 3rd November between 10am and 12 noon.

Prom 2016

Thursday 14th July, saw students, staff and families coming together at YPI on Chanterlands Avenue to celebrate another fantastic year for the Tweendykes 6th Form. The students looked fantastic in their formal dresses and suits. They were dancing and singing all night, with fun party games and competitions and even a photo booth crammed full of props, which made for some fabulous photos. Special thanks to Lesley Kemp, Vicky Cartwright and Pat Baggley for organising such a memorable night. We’d also like to thank all the staff at YPI, Andy the DJ and YOLO photography for making the night the success it was.

Outdoor Team Challenge

Allerthorpe Lakeland Park

Wednesday 22nd June 2016

Two groups of students from KS3 and KS4 were invited to join other schools in the Outdoor Team Challenge event. The students were able to enjoy the following activities -

“The Great Escape” were they had to overcome a number of physical and metal challenges such as – Barrel walk, Skis, Blindfold Minefield, Swamp, up and over.

“Survival of the fittest” The students had to make a shelter, filter clean water, make and light a fire and heat the water over the fire to make hot drinks.

“Fly the Flat”, The students had to cross a channel of water onto an island using only one kayak (no paddle) and a length of rope. Before crossing over the team had to design and make a flag then transport it across the water and raise the flag onto a 3 metre high flagpole to signal successful completion of the challenge.

“Sign of the Times”. The students had to canoe to fetch equipment to build a signpost back on land. Then canoe to collect signs of UK Cities from a boat in middle of the lake and put the signs on the post pointing in the correct direction.

Parents Activity Afternoon

As part of the Leading Parents Partnership Award Tweendykes School are committed in keeping parents/carers up to date with their child’s day at school. We organised an activity afternoon for parents/carers who have children in our junior school. Parents/carers were able to join in ‘sensory movement’, ‘sensory story’ and ‘Music Mandy’. We would be interested in hearing from any parents/carers if they would like to join in more activities and the type of activities they would like. Contact Lesley Kemp at school for any ideas.

Christmas Concert Review

I had high expectations for the school Christmas concert but it exceeded them– completely blew them out of the water! It started with refreshments in the dining hall, where families mingled and took part in the sixth form tombola. I have never seen a school event so well attended more seating was brought in but in the end, it was standing room only at the back, which is great.

The children were all dressed in their Christmas jumpers, so there were Santas, Rudolphs and Christmas puddings galore. They all looked amazing and very festive. There were some brave pupils sitting in front of the curtains who were doing readings using a microphone. They each stood up in turn and read their lines beautifully. One by one the class performances took place, with Christmas music, we saw classes dress the Christmas tree, leave out a mince pie for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph, have snowball fights and pull a stuck Santa out of the chimney!

I love the enthusiasm and excitement of some of the children who wave frantically at their families in the audience and there were some escapees, who could not resist rushing out for a quick cuddle before returning to the stage. There would always been unpredictability when holding a Christmas concert in any school, but the possibilities must be higher in a special school I would have thought. But I saw no tantrums or stage fright at all, so they must have been very well rehearsed.

But the highlight for me had to be a brave solo performance of ‘Let it Go’ from the film Frozen. She was dressed as Elsa and bearing a microphone sang her heart out. There was not a dry eye in the audience as we witnessed such enthusiasm and joy, as she gained confidence we were treated to actions too.

The whole show was a real delight and I would like to thank all of the children and staff for making my day. I continued to grin all day long whenever I reflected back over the show, it was indeed an uplifting event to share in.

I said as I went into the hall that I tend to prefer the Carol service, but next Thursday’s carols will now have to be pretty special to beatyesterday’s concert!

Parent Coffee Morning

On Friday 27th November, the first parent drop in/coffee morning took place in the school meeting room. Emma Clark, Parent Governor, sent out invitations to a selection of parents inviting them along any time between 9am and midday, where they could expect to meet other parents to chat and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea , along with some home baking.

“ We deliberately started on a small scale for the first one, to see how the room would work and for me to get used to making the hot drinks, but now that I have seen how it could work, we would love more parents/carers to come along…the more the merrier” Emma continued “The plan is to try to replace the ‘school gates’ experience that we parents mainly miss out on, when you can share stories and make new friends, with your children in common. Last Friday, fourteen parents came along and they came from across the school and we were able to offer each other support over a cup of coffee and a chocolate brownie!”

The plan is that these parent events will take place every other Friday morning, so the next one will be on Friday 11th December and all parents/carers are welcome and we can accommodate pre-school children too.  There is no need to RSVP or stay for the full three hours, the idea of a drop in is that you can just call in whenever you like and for as long as you like: “ With my own son, I know how quickly plans can change, and so I wanted to make sure that it was as flexible as possible, so that parents still feel able to come along, even if they are not ready until 10.30 for example”

It is hoped that this will become a regular and popular event, that will grow in 2016, so please come along on Friday 11th of December, from 9am.

Bewerley Park

Some of our senior pupils along with 4 staff are attended a two night residential at Bewerley Park.  Here are some of our pictures from the visit we visited Bingham Rocks and a show cave.  We went mountain biking and had a very wet experience canoeing.  Staff and pupils were challenged on the high wires

Children in Need - £369 raised

Children In Need.jpg

To help raise funds for Children in Need staff and pupils at Tweendykes dressed up in either their Onesies or in yellow. The senior pupils had a special assembly were we did ‘The Great Tweendykes Bake off’. Each class had to produce 12 identical Pudsey Buns and these were judged by some of our senior pupils who had been learning describing words and putting them into full sentences.

Some of the comments about the buns were – ‘Truly scrumptious’, ‘Very light and fluffy’, ‘The icing is nice and creamy’

One class had clearly cheated and bought their Pudsey Buns and the judges were not impressed.

One judge even commented – ‘Out of date’

Lots of fun was had by all and we managed to raise a massive £369. Well done everyone!

MacMillan Coffee Morning - £267.20 raised

Tweendykes School joined forces with Winifred Holtby Academy to host a MacMillan Coffee Morning on 25th September 2015.  Members of the community were invited along with parents and carers from both schools.  A big thanks to all parents/carers who donated cakes/buns/biscuits and who attended the morning.  Pupils from Tweendykes joined in and purchased slices of cakes, fancy buns and giant cookies.  During the morning we raised a massive £267.20.  Thank you to all involved.

Duke of Edinburgh update

A group of Sixth Form students have been working hard over the last year to gain their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. They have completed voluntary work by helping to develop the garden area at Astra Youth Centre, physical development learning football skills, ICT skills and the all important expedition.

The students walked from Brantingham Church to Melton Bottoms where they stayed over night! The next day they walked from Melton Bottoms to Brough car park. Along the way they had to prepare their own meals and read maps whilst carrying all their provision in a back pack. Great work to all involved with this award!

Disports finals

A group of students qualified for the Disports Finals at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds. They competed against other schools from the Yorkshire area in events such as 100m running, 50m running, javelin and standing long jump. We had a very successful day and came away with over 20 medals! Well done to everyone who took part!
